Virginia Mason "Know Me"

Virginia Mason “Know Me”

 About

This was my senior capstone project that I completed with 3 other students in my major. We were to utilize all of our tools in design thinking to help Virginia Mason hospital develop a tool that would better complement that patient-doctor relationship.

Check out my process book to see everything that we did.

Executive Summary

Virginia Mason is a hospital located in downtown Seattle, with the goal and vision of providing the best quality health care for their patients. Working with our sponsor, we are designing the “Know Me” tool to better the relationship between patients and their health care providers at Virginia Mason Hospital.

Process

  1. Research. We utilized research to understand our stakeholders and come up with design requirements.

  2. Prototyping. We created prototypes based on design requirements from our research milestone.

  3. Evaluation. We evaluated our prototypes with stakeholders to come up with any necessary changes for our final design.

  4. Final Designs. This was where we showcased our work with our capstone class as well as the final deliverables we handed off to Virginia Mason to use.

Research

1. Case Studies. We found literature on how and why knowing a patient holistically is better for patient care. We read some articles and got a few takeaways:

2. Field Observations. We spent a few mornings at the hospital conducting field observations. Here are our findings:

3. Past “Know Me” Analysis. Virginia Mason had a preliminary tool that they designed and tested but never fully implemented. We did an analysis on it and the responses that came from about 30 different patients. At the end of the form, the patients and providers rated how useful the form was during their appointment. Here were our findings from seeing the past responses on the tool

4. User Interviews. We interviewed 6 healthcare providers, 5 administrators and 5 patients at Virginia Mason. Here are our findings for each stakeholder

Design Requirements

Based off of our research completed, we came up with a list of design requirements for our project.

Prototyping

Based off our design requirements, we decided to create 2 different prototypes. One is an online version of the form that patients can fill out before their visit. Another is a paper prototype that patients can fill out at the hospital. Through a series of sketching and wireframing, we finally came up with high fidelity prototypes.

Evaluation

The final step in the process was to evaluate our prototype and make refinements before presenting our final product. We had a day where we encourage stakeholders to come in and evaluate our product. In total, we had 5 patients, 8 providers and 13 administrators come in for usability testing. Here are some statistical results:

After conducting a thematic analysis of findings specifically for the paper and digital prototype, we refined our prototypes for their final design.

Reflection

After our final designs were done, we presented these at a capstone showcase and also created a video for our project. If you’d like to see the full process book including prototypes, please click the button below.
